Excel Compare

Upload two .xlsx files to see every cell that differs between them, highlighted in a single spreadsheet-style grid.

Compares the first worksheet of each file, cell by cell. A highlighted cell shows Sheet B's value — hover it to see both the original (Sheet A) and changed (Sheet B) values. Runs entirely in your browser; neither file is uploaded anywhere.

What is Excel Compare?

Excel Compare checks two spreadsheet files cell by cell and shows you exactly what's different between them — useful for catching accidental edits between two versions of a report, verifying an export matches the original data, or reviewing changes a collaborator made to a shared file. Both files are read entirely in your browser; the comparison looks at the first worksheet of each file, row by row and column by column. Any cell whose value differs between the two files is highlighted, so you don't have to scan the whole spreadsheet manually.

How to Use Excel Compare

  1. 1

Upload Sheet A: Choose the original .xlsx file.

  2. 2

Upload Sheet B: Choose the file you want to compare against it.

  3. 3

Review Highlighted Cells: Any cell that differs is highlighted and shows Sheet B's value — hover a highlighted cell to see both the original and changed values.

What Gets Compared

Only the first worksheet of each file is compared, matched by row and column position (row 5, column C in Sheet A is compared against row 5, column C in Sheet B, regardless of cell formatting or formulas — only the displayed value is compared). If one file has more rows or columns than the other, the extra cells are treated as empty on the shorter side and will show as a difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Excel Compare.

Just the resulting values, the same way the cell displays after formulas are calculated — not the underlying formula text itself.

Only the first worksheet (the first tab) of each file is read and compared. If the data you want to check is on a different tab, move or copy it to the first worksheet before uploading.

Only .xlsx is currently supported. For CSV, a plain text comparison would work just as well — try Text Compare instead.

No. Both files are read and compared entirely in your browser using JavaScript — nothing is sent to a server.

No hard limit is enforced, but very large spreadsheets (tens of thousands of rows) may feel slower since the comparison runs in your browser's main thread.
